DESCRIPTION:Wessex Water has completed a £26 million improvement scheme at a sewage treatment works in Weston-super-Mare to safeguard water quality at the town’s beaches. The improvement means the works can store more storm water during intense rainfall and treat sewage to a higher standard before it is released into the estuary. Although over the years bathing water quality at Weston Main and Uphill slipway regularly met the mandatory bathing water standard, under the revised Bathing Water Directive, which comes into force in 2015, and based on historical sampling results, water quality would be assessed as ‘poor’ under stricter quality standards being introduced. We are being given a most interesting tour of this upgraded facility. There is no charge for entry but I need to have names asap for security reasons. We will travel by coach and the fare will be £18. Pick up can be in Cirencester at the Beeches carpark at 8.00am, in Tetbury or at the M4 junction 18. Lunch can be taken at the Cove restaurant in Weston-super-Mare. Return home about 5.00pm

DESCRIPTION:After some years conservation and limited access a dedicated museum has been built where the remains and thousands of artefacts from the wreck are on display. Faced with the ever-present threat of the French navy and a strong Scottish fleet, Henry VIII started building his naval firepower as soon as he was King. The Mary Rose took pride of place in his new fleet. She sank in the Solent some 500 years ago for reasons yet unknown but is now recovered and for your inspection. At its time it was the cutting edge of naval technology and is something not to be missed. We will travel by coach from Cirencester Beeches Car park leaving at 8.30am. The coach fare will be £26 per person. There is a charge for entry of £16 to Mary Rose Museum payable on the day, but it may be possible to get either a group ticket £14 or a ticket for all attractions £21 if we have sufficient takers with prior booking. I would need in the latter case to have your choice and money for entry at least three weeks before we go. Please send your cheques for the coach fare payable to ‘Fairford Classic Car Club’ to Bunny Lees-Smith at 1 Follyfield, Hankerton, Malmesbury, SN16 9LA tel 01666 577275

DESCRIPTION:NPL is one of the UK's leading science and research facilities. It is a centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available. The facilities in Teddington are among the world's most extensive and sophisticated for measurement science. On 20 May 2014, NPL Open House will give people the chance to explore much of the science that goes on at NPL and the facilities that are used to do it. The date is significant: 20 May is World Metrology Day. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the International Metre Convention in 1875. We made this visit two years ago and are pleased to be been invited again to such a wide ranging and interesting research organisation. We will travel by coach from Cirencester Beeches Carpark leaving at about 12 noon and returning about 7.00pm. The coach fare will be £24 per person. There is no charge for entry but I need to have names asap for security reasons. Please send your cheques payable to ‘CSTS’ to Bunny Lees-Smith at 1 Follyfield, Hankerton, Malmesbury, SN16 9LA\N

DESCRIPTION:We are organising a visit to the next public access day at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), south of Oxford,  which will be held on Thursday 21 August.  This is a fantastic chance to see behind the scenes at our world-leading laboratory and to talk to the scientists and engineers who work here about the research we’re doing.  There’ll be tours, talks and demonstrations, and plenty of activities for children.  There will be a morning and an afternoon session, with registration starting at 09:00 and 13:30.  The sessions will finish by 12:30 and 17:00 respectively.\N As a working laboratory, we cannot guarantee which facilities will be visited at this stage, but possible areas include:\N\N·         Particle Physics Department (PPD): PPD work on the experiments and data of the Large Hadron Collider as well as other particle physics experiments such as T2K.  They also run the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE).\N·         ISIS: one of particle accelerators, which uses neutrons and muons to understand the structure of matter, studying everything from drugs to treat cancer, to anglo-saxon swords to aircraft wings.\N·         Central Laser Facility (CLF): CLF consists of five laser systems, ranging from optical tweezers and lasers used for biological research, to very intense lasers which investigate the most extreme physical conditions.\N·         RAL Space:  RAL Space have been involved in over 200 space missions – from designing and building satellites to space testing facilities and work on robotics.\N·         Scientific Computing (SCD):  We are celebrating 50 years of computing at RAL this year and this access day will be a chance to look back over the history of computer as well as see our state of the art computing facilities.  SCD is home to Tier One, which is the UK’s data centre for the Large Hadron Collider and JASMIN/CEMS, which processes data from weather satellites.  \N·         Technology: Our world-class engineering department works with all of our experiments and makes possible a whole range of exciting projects – from particle physics to astronomy.  \N\NThere will also be a ‘science fair’, with plenty of activities and demonstrations suitable for all ages, including our infra-red camera, cosmic ray detector, moonrocks and meteorites, deep field activities and lots more, so please do bring the whole family along.  The majority of tours are not suited for children under seven years of age, so families with young children may  choose to stay in the science fair areas.\NBOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.  To book, please contact Herbert.   Please let him know:\N\N·         Ages of all visitors who are under 16 years of age (some facilities have age restrictions in place, and we will include activities and demonstrations for children, as well as age-appropriate tours)\N·         Which facilities you would like to see.  Please note that it may not be possible to fulfil all requests.  If you have a specific reason for wanting to visit a particular facility (e.g. a school project), please let us know.  Additionally, if there are facilities you have already visited please let us know and we will try to avoid repeat visits.\N·         If you have any special requirements (for access etc) please let us know.  Please note that RAL is a very large site, and a visit necessarily involves some amount of walking.  Some areas of site have strong magnetic fields or are in radiation controlled areas.  If you wish to avoid these places (for instance, if you have a pace-maker, metallic implants, are pregnant or breast-feeding) please let us know.\N\N There is a restaurant on site which you are welcome to use – however, if you intend to do so please let us know in advance so we can inform our catering team to expect extra customers.\N Places do fill up extremely quickly, so please book early to avoid disappointment.  If you have any questions please let us know.

DESCRIPTION:A coach trip to the National Physical Laboratories open day at Teddington. This is a biannual trip which we have done before and found to be extremely interesting as it relates to the standards used in measuring a huge range of applications ranging from dimension, sound, time, radio, light, and so on.  You name it and it is measurable they do it and have a standard. This is where you get down to laboratory bench level and talk directly with the scientists actually doing the research work.\NNPL is one of the UK's leading science and research facilities. It is a centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available. The facilities in Teddington are among the world's most extensive and sophisticated for measurement science.\NOn 17 May 2016, NPL Open House will give people the chance to explore much of the science that goes on at NPL and the facilities that are used to do it. The week is significant: Friday 20 May is World Metrology Day. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which continues to provide the basis for a single, coherent system of measurements, traceable to the International System of Units (SI).\NThe occasion offers a chance to celebrate the impact of measurement on our daily lives, making it the perfect time to visit NPL, the UK's National Measurement Institute, and discover what they do.\NConfirmed paid booking is essential by Friday 29th April to ensure your place. We can only take 30 people. The coach will leave Cirencester Beeches carpark (11.30am) and Cricklade rugby carpark (11.40am) and arrive back about 7.30 to 8.00pm\NPlease email bunnyleessmith@btinternet.com to book your place and confirm by paying £22.50 by bank transfer to sort code 40-52-40; a/c number 00016646 using the reference: your name/NPL. DESCRIPTION:Much publicity was rightly given to the sad repatriation of Service personnel who had lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan; however, nowhere near as much publicity was given to the incredible and often heroic efforts of Tactical Medical Wing personnel to evacuate casualties by helicopter from the battlefields to the Field Hospitals for stabilization prior to their urgent aeromedical recovery to major trauma centres in the UK. \NThe Branch is most fortunate to have been offered the opportunity to visit the RAF Tactical Medical Wing (TMW) at RAF Brize Norton on: 27 September 2017 commencing at 13:00 and finishing circa 16:30\NProgramme        \NThe Programme will embrace all aspects of RAF Aeromedical Evacuation, including the history, techniques and equipment used plus examples of live operational aeromedical evacuations.  Subject to operational circumstances, we hope to visit an aircraft configured for aeromedical evacuation.\NCar Parking\NCar parking will be in the lay-by shown on the map below and you should go straight to the lay-by and not the Main Visitor Reception at RAF Brize Norton.  Ideally arrange to arrive by 12:45. We will need advanced notification of car details, drivers and passengers so that we can submit a visitor nominal roll in advance of the visit. We encourage the use of car-sharing.   Tactical Aeromedical Wing will provide any on-base transport that may be required.\NCost\NThere is no charge for the visit itself but we may suggest a small fee to cover refreshments and also make a donation to a suitable charity.\NSecurity\NAs always, a suitable photo ID (Driving Licence or Passport) MUST be carried at all times and be available on request.\NRegistration\NThose of you wishing to attend should contact the Branch Secretary (raeswindon@gmail.com  or 07740 136609) to register your desire to attend by 1 September 2017.

DESCRIPTION:CSTS visit to\NNorbury Park Estate, BIFoR (Birmingham Institute of Forest Research)\Nand\NFACE (Free Air Carbon Enrichment facility) Staffordshire.\N\NAerial view of the BIFoR FACE facility\NView of the experimental ground plots from the ThingLink virtual guide\N\NTuesday 16th April 2024 \NLeaving 8.15 am returning 7.00 pm \NNorbury Park Estate is 2,100 acres of woodland and farmland in Staffordshire.\NPurchased by Professor Jo Bradwell in 2009 it is managed as a private ‘carbon storage project’, harnessing and maximising the potential of trees and soil to sequester CO2.\NAround 500,000  trees have been planted and a range of innovative forestry practices and research developed,  notably around planting diverse intimate  mixtures and  nitrogen fixing species.\NA philanthropic grant to Birmingham University led to the creation of BIFoR and the internationally important FACE experiment based on the estate.\NAll the agricultural land has been converted to multi species herbal leys and ‘mob grazing’ system. \NWe will start the visit at the BIFoR FACE experiment, which was "switched on" on 3rd April 2017 to address the impact of climate and environmental change on woodlands. The fundamental research questions are: \N\NHow does elevated CO2 change carbon flows and storage, nutrient cycles and water use?\NHow does elevated CO2 change biodiversity and ecosystem structure and function?\NHow does elevated CO2 affect susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stress?.\N\NCO2 is pumped around trees to simulate the predicted levels of 2050, to learn about the eƯects of increased CO2 and help plant woodland most likely to thrive in the future. See https://www.thinglink.com/mediacard/1468559255387766787\NWe will then have lunch at the Long Barn, followed by a tour of the estate and a Q&A discussion.\NWe will meet Professor Jo Bradwell and Steve Spencer, the Estate Director.\NThis special visit is possible thanks to an introduction by CSTS member John Cookson.\NWe plan to arrive at 11.00am , so need to leave Cirencester at 8.15am, we will leave to return about 4.00, so be back in Cirencester  shortly before 7.00pm.  \NDetails of the coach, pick up point, clothing advice and cost will be sent to those who would like to come, there are a maximum of 30 places, please email me at cajbs@hotmail.co.uk as soon as possible.\NChris Stevens

DESCRIPTION:I recently attended an evening tour of the Science and Innovation Park at Wroughton, and it is definitely a visit I would recommend to members.\NVisitors are taken on a guided tour of the Hawking Building in small groups of around 16 people, led by knowledgeable volunteers. The building itself is not a conventional museum but a vast storage facility that houses around 350,000 objects belonging to the Science Museum Group. These items form part of the national collections that support museums across England.\NThe tour lasts about 90 minutes, and because the site is primarily a working storage facility rather than a traditional exhibition space, the experience feels quite different from visiting a museum. Instead of fixed displays, the volunteers select a number of objects to show the group and talk about their history, design and scientific significance. This means that each tour can be slightly different, depending on the interests and choices of the guides. For that reason alone, it would certainly be worth returning for another visit.\NThe collections themselves are fascinating and remarkably varied, ranging from large technological artefacts to smaller scientific instruments, all stored within the vast shelving systems of the Hawking Building.\NTickets currently cost £27.50 per adult and this can be done on an individual basis, you do not have to organise your own group. Tours take place at various times depending on the day, but places appear to fill quickly. Earlier in the year the system operated more like a ballot, and we had to wait around three months before securing a slot. However, it now seems that booking has become more straightforward, with dates available most days up to the end of July.\NMembers who may be interested in arranging a visit can find further details here:https://www.scienceinnovationpark.org.uk/visit-us\NFor anyone with an interest in science, engineering or the history of technology, it is a fascinating opportunity to see behind the scenes of one of the UK’s most important scientific collections.\NStephanie North
