DESCRIPTION:The following announcement has come from Harwell.  CSTS is not organising a visit to this, but members may wish to make their own arrangements to attend.\NGood Afternoon,\NWe are pleased and excited to announce that we will be holding a Public Open Day at Harwell on Saturday 11 July.  All of our facilities at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory will be open, as well as our partners the Diamond Light Source and the Research Complex at Harwell.\NThere are more details on our website – www.opendaysatharwell.org – about all of the different things you can see and do when you’re on campus.  The day will open at 9:30 and last entry will be at 16:30 (closing at 17:30).  You will be free to arrive throughout the day and to plan your own visit, deciding which of our facilities you would like to visit, which talks you would like to attend, and which activities you would like to take part in.\NThere will be plenty to see – including some of the most powerful lasers in the world, live links to CERN and our underground laboratory at Boulby and our newly installed thermal vacuum chamber, which is the largest in the UK, giving you the chance to learn how we use this equipment to test the satellites and spacecraft that are currently allowing us to explore our solar system and the Universe beyond.  You’ll be able to visit Diamond Light Source, as well as some of the UK’s most powerful supercomputers and our state-of-the-art engineering workshops.  You will also be able to meet researchers from around the UK, including the UK Space Agency, at our science fair.  There’ll be plenty for our younger visitors as well, whether it’s comet making, measuring the strength of biscuits or popping balloons with lasers.\NIn order to help us plan the event properly, we are asking people to let us know they’re planning to attend - you can register for places via the website, or directly on our registration page: https://eventbrite.co.uk/event/16585985128/.\NIf you have any questions at all, please do let us know.\NWe look forward to welcoming you to campus in July!\NBest wishes,\NThe Public Engagement Team at RAL
