Insect Pest and Vector Control: GM technologies, risks and regulation
Description
In this talk I will discuss aspects of GM insects for the control of agricultural pests and vector-borne diseases.
Insects caused billions of dollars worth of damage to agricultural crops (both pre and post harvest) and inflict worldwide morbidity and mortality through the transmission of infectious diseases. We need novel control methods and biological control through the use of GM insects provides one new tool. I will introduce the basic biology associated with GM insects and define the essential ideas. Focussing on population suppression approaches I will illustrate the ecological implications of GM insect releases using mathematical modelling.
I will discuss the regulatory issues that surround the use of GM insects and conclude with a illustrative computer game on the economics of GM insect control.
