Description

Dr. Jason Swan CEng MIMMM

MEng, University of Nottingham, Mechanical Engineering

PhD, University of Birmingham, School of Metallurgy and Materials

Rolls-Royce Submarines, Materials Technologist and Group Leader

Dr. Iwan Grech

Iwan first became interested in the nuclear industry in his secondary school physics lessons where there was a poster of the Joint European Torus (JET) on the wall. The JET tokamak had the promise of advancing our understanding of nuclear fusion and providing abundant, clean energy for the world. This interest continued into his physics degree and his subsequent masters in nuclear energy.
As part of his masters project Iwan had the opportunity to work at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy which houses JET, carrying out a project on fusion relevant materials and their behaviour in service. This cultivated an interest in materials science and their degradation which led to him pursuing a PhD in materials science and corrosion, specifically additively manufacturing and then testing industry relevant alloys.
Post PhD, Iwan works as a materials engineer within the Materials and Chemistry team at Rolls-Royce SMR. His specific tasks include supporting the steam generator, pipework and containment vessel teams. And the production and review of GDA submission documents relating to materials degradation and corrosion.
